“Stephan Laubner - Something's out there”

Over the last decade Stephan Laubner has split his time between two disparate but similarly enchanting worlds of sound. His 'Something' imprint is home to the bulk of his output, from the isolationist scapes of Lunatik Sound System to the raw house of his abbreviated STL moniker, with cherished releases also appearing on the revered Perlon and Smallville imprints. The deeply rooted House music of his STL moniker is fashioned from an all-analog setup and noted for its raw, warm and intuitive sound marked with hypnotic melodies and an innate understanding of classic Detroit and Chicago functions. His majestic ambient constructions recorded under the Lunatik Sound System moniker and under his own name are much less known yet comprise the large bulk of his catalogue, taking in sublime drone electronics strongly evocative of classic Gas, Marsen Jules, Thomas Koner or Deathprod with a touch of charming early electronic experimentalism thrown into the mix. Following in the tradition of German synth enthusiasts from Moebius and Roedelius to Basic Channel, Laubner is keeping the spirit of Kosmiche alive from his base deep in the Harz mountains of central Germany. All that remains is for you to discover him...

“Fixing my habit again”

Damn, this set is delicious! And who the hell is this guy anyway - I never even heard of him before! Only 4 tracks into the selection and I feel like I've discovered a new Wolfgang Voigt/Geir Jenssen/Robert Henke/Helge Sten - all rolled into one person! What's really impressive about this guy is the stylistic gamut he covers, from the sensuous deep house tips through dark ambient/modern classical landscapes, all of it underscored by a nicely cinematic, widescreen feel. Totally 100% right up my alley. Thanks guys, but you really should stop feeding my habit, all this music downloading is going to blow a gasket in my computer hard disc soon.

“Haunting!”

the ambient tracks, especially, are hauntingly beautiful. i agree with frank paul - there's a lot of robert henke in there. or, maybe it's the other way around. nevertheless, amazing set!

“Something new...”

Like Frank said, I'd never heard of Stephan Laubner before this but am thoroughly enjoying listening to his music and it's exactly the kind of thing I like. Thanks for introducing me to something new and good!

“Discovery!”

I have been listening to Stephan's music for almost two years now (and own every recording) and agree with your description and with the previous comments. Lunatik Sound System is an absolute delight. Stephan deserves wider recognition and he is one helluva nice guy to boot! Kudos to 14 Tracks for giving him this exposure.

JESUS, I absolutely love this producer and didn't even know about Lunatic Soundsystem until now also, beautiful stuff. This guy is down on the list as one of my all time favorite producers....Total legend!

“Overview listen!”

You know, I think it would be fantastic for this site if somehow you guys get some sort of 'overview' listen link happening. Meaning, a link where about 20-30 seconds of good bits of each song flow in and out of each other so you can get a feel of the entire selection in about 5 minutes. As it is, sometimes it's a bit daunting to find out if it's worth buying the whole 14tracks. Listening to each song at a time, for a bunch of songs, can be very time consuming and sometimes if the first 2 I randomly try don't grab me I'll forget about the whole set. We live in ADD times people, I want to know straight away if I'm into this whole selection or not!

“Overview Solution”

There is an answer - simply pop to Boomkat and listen to the 14 Tracks there. Eg: http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=244906 You can then skip through the track looking for the bits you like. Sweet!
