Lifted from a truly jawdropping debut from gifted Malian ngoni player Bassekou Kouyate.
Slow devotional Malian jazz on this 1970's masterpiece from the Orchestre Régional de Kayes.
One of Mali's longest enduring and influential bands, here fronted by Mory Kanté.
Probably the world's most gifted Kora player with another sublime stretch of cascading strings.
Another string virtuoso with a masterclass in distilled, heart-stopping simplicity.
Lifted off what must be one of the most played albums in our offices...ever.
The incredible Rail Band again, this time fronted by their original vocalist and legend Salif Keita.

Title track from the very last album recorded by smouldering Malian talent Ali Farka Toure.
Beautiful Griot rendition built around a sparkling Gamelan melody.
Standout piece from Oumou Sangaré, the "Songbird of Wassoulou."
Another sublime moment from the Rail band in one of its many incarnations.
Played on what is claimed to be the only 44 string Kora in the world.
Amazing 8 Minute version of the oft-performed Duga.
Despite performing prolifically since the 60's, it took until 1990 for this debut to be released.

“Excellent”
Excellent choice--there are mountains of Africa stuff waiting to be discovered. If anyone likes the Rail band tracks I also recommend "Armee Mali," "Koro Koni," "Dioula" and "Tiramakan." 14 Tracks could also do a Congolese Rumba selection or a Franco selection--this music in a lot of ways lays waste to most non-African music.

“Whatever happened to "Your Suggestions"?”
Hey guys, whatever happened to the "Your Suggestions" feature? For more than two months now there's been a #1 voted suggestion (14 Tracks of African Highlife), the 14th of the month has come and gone (twice) and you've done nothing with these more than 50 suggestions offered up. What gives?

“Stunning...”
Just when I think I'm starting to get a grip on what makes beautiful music "beautiful", a selection like this comes along. Time after time 14 tracks has blown my mind, but for me, this is the most revelatory selection since 14 tracks contemplating the raga. Hats off to you guys, really. I just can't get enough.
