“The loop-finding jazz records of Jan Jelinek”

Berlin's Jan Jelinek is one of those exceptional producers who just doesn't sound like anyone else - a rare commodity in electronic music. Despite amassing a now substantial body of work that's admittedly been eulogised, imitated and copied over the years, he still somehow seems to have travelled largely under the radar. Recording material under a whole bunch of monikers and pseudonyms, he's best know for the music he released as Farben for the Klang Elektronik label, a project that first appeared in the late 1990's and which gave the world an exquisitely crafted blend of heady Jazz atmospherics merged with clever, deeply complex rhythmic deconstruction's and percolating funk. At a time when most of his contemporaries were immersed in technology and futurism, Jelinek was one of the few producers who looked to his scratched and worn record collection for inspiration, making use of crackling loops and found sounds in building his effortlessly intricate club tracks. His eponymous material utilises the same methodology but exudes a more contemplative tone, seeped in resonance and jaw-droppingly layered jazz loops that he seems to have trademarked as his own - when you hear a Jan Jelinek production, there's no doubting the presence behind the controls. Listening to this 14 tracks selection, which features Jelinek productions under both his own name and as Farben, you quickly uncover the thread that runs throughout his material and which typifies his sound - warm, suggestive, inviting music for night and day, crafted by one of the most consistently rewarding producers in electronic music.
