Sparse yet almost harrowing angular sounds from this sometime Sunn O))) collaborator.
Dark textures built around lo-fi black metal from Montreal's Eric Quach.
Helge Sten delivering another endlessly harrowing treatment, this time for Mexico's Murcof.
Sami Sänpäkkilä, owner and curator of the Fonal label, with a midnight excursion into the forest.
Labeling itself "acoustic doom" and plundering a record collection stacked with Earth and Badalamenti.
A three-pronged guitar assault on doomy krautrock experimentation.
Pristine processes funelled into the darkest shapes from the inimitable Vainio and the Sahko imprint.

Evocatively rendered creaking turning into a sea of sustain and distant harmonic signals.
Micro-acoustic darkage from Asher Thal-Nir for the Room 40 label.
Destruction and decay painted in looped, faded colours.
Thomas Koner-style droning recorded 'in the fog of autumn'.
Norway's Geir Jenssen with a typically sombre electronic reading.
Arctic field recordings creaking with a sense of menace,
Berlin's Christopher Douglas with advanced soundscapes and 21st century gloom.

“Fantastic 14 tracks”
A note to thank you for the 14 tracks of dark ambience. As always, the 14 tracks showed me something new, something scary and something beautiful. Boomkat, you are a wonder.

Deathprod all the way. Seriously good selection - the Deathprod boxed set is still one of the best things i've ever bought.

for more stuff like Svarte Greiner, i'd recommend anything by his band Deaf Center (who are incredible) and a lot of other stuff on Type records, like "Dead Sea" by Xela and Grouper. Search for Type records on Boomkat.

“Disappointing :(”
I got excited about this list however I found it rather dull. Most songs just move around a simple riff and repeat over and over. What happened to the limitless experimentalism of the Orb as far ambient music is concerned? Elegi was the most interesting, but to go that much deeper and darker I would recommend bands like 'Main', 'Human Greed', "The Body Lovers' or Dead Voices On Air - Incthuthil (amazing stuff)

“ES - WOW!!”
Hey guys
Thanks for another stellar compilation. What I love best is finding out about stuff I've never heard of. On your recommendation I got the ES album (already had some of the others, e.g. Elegi which is also superb) and it was, like, a jaw-dropping revelation. I haven't felt that stunned from a late-night listen since first time through Alva Noto Xerrox, Murcof Martes, Xela Dead Sea, and the like. This album deserves widespread acclaim, like put it on a top 10 list somewhere. Awesome.
Thanks
Frank

“Superbly Evocative Mix”
Thanks for this collection of perfectly arranged tracks - almost every one is a gem. I've been searching for this type of dark, moody music all winter long and here it is. A fantastic way into a genre I know little about. Cheers Boomkat.

“not dark enough”
Guys, this is definitely NOT what defines the sound known as dark ambient to its fans. Don't get me wrong, this is a great selection of quality stuff, and I guess you can call it dark, but dark ambient genre it is not. What should've been here: Bad Sector, Apoptose, Troum, Inade, Blood Box, etc. Sadly, Boomkat does not sell CDs by these artists... It is a different type of electronica that arose from industrial music, but people who listen to it usually revolve in different social circles than IDMers, dubstep club-goers etc. That might explain why the dark ambient proper didn't make it in this selection.
