“14 tracks unstrung, the cello”

Being one of the lowest pitched string instruments, the Cello lends itself perfectly to our obsession with the bottom registers, carrying with it bass weight and a kind of aural gravity that often colours its surroundings with romance and tension. The selection this week comes to us from a broad spectrum of players, from the traditional movements of the Viklarbo Chamber Ensemble to the unparalleled pop genius of Arthur Russell, from the dense layering of Stars of The Lid to the mechanical augmentations of Janek Schaefer. Yet despite the variance in origin and intention, these pieces all share the austerity, melancholy and otherworldliness that gives the cello such prominence in modern music, at once effortlessly experimental, daring and suggestive of the extraordinary.

“Arthur Russell”

Only recently discovered him - 'This Is How We walk On The Moon' is by far one of the greatest songs I've ever heard.

“Ah you got me..”

Cello hits me right where it hurts and makes it all better.

“Lovely”

As always, great stuff. It's a shame that 14 tracks doesn't include out of print 7" vinyl, 'cos sixtoo and norsala's 'homages' is an absolute cello killer. I've heard it said that the cello is the instrument most like the human voice, and therein lies it's appeal.

“As a cellist”

I can fully endorse this selection :) Not that you need me to. Particularly nice to see Part Timer vs Aaron Martin in there!

“Really Great....”

I haven't even gotten to the end of my first listen, but I already have to say that this is the best collection since: "14 Tracks that make you wish you played the piano..." I'd really love to see more classical verging collections like this, or ones based on particular instruments, e.g. Violin or even the Melodica.

“Like the site!”

Cool selection and nice "secret record shop" approach - 14 track limit and bundled price make it manageable. Look forward to the next one.

“Excellent collection but tag problems”

This was a great purchase - eclectic and stimulating. One point though - after importing to itunes, I was surprised to see the tags in such disarray. Song titles and artists were messy, some tracks lacked artwork and most lacked genre information. Also, personally, I would rather these 14 tracks appeared as a compilation for organisational purposes. You could always add original album info as a comment in the tag.

“@Thomas”

Thanks for bringing up the tags. When we make the full selections available as zipped downloads, the tracks in these zips will be tagged to reflect the selection and include the selection artwork within the zip.

As well as the selection artwork, pretty soon all new tracks we get through Boomkat will have the release artwork embedded in the tags.

Whenever you’re buying a single track through 14tracks though rather than a bundle, that will keep the original tags for that track and release.

Thanks for all the comments, please do keep ’em coming.

“any addenda?”

Most people are probably turned off by the lyrics but I always liked The Martini Bros RMX of "Control" on Disko B...

“Another spot on selection from 14 tracks”

I find these sort of compliations to be great for the time challenged who want exposure to new music without the fag of searching online and reading reviews like this!!
