“The Best of 2011 Part 1”

So here we are again with another annual roundup covering twelve months of standout music from a multicoloured spectrum taking in Techno to Pop, Bass music to Ambient, Coldwave to House and numerous mongrel styles in between. Over the next four weeks we're gonna be picking choice cuts that have defined our year, starting here with a sublime chamber-blissout from Julia Holter, squashed House malfunctions from Andy Stott, Gerry Read and BNJMN, industrial-strength synth experimentation from Roly Porter, majestically moody AFX-style ambience from Vatican Shadow, bittersweet midnight romance from John Maus, downbeat gothic pop from Tropic of Cancer and Sleep Over, and four minutes of distilled bliss from Grouper. In all, almost 90 minutes of incredible music...and that's just part one!

Great to hear music from Chris Watson, the undisputed king of wildlife recording. I'm a big fan [since 1979], of the mighty Cabaret Voltaire, in which Chris used to play keyboards. I tell people this, and they don't believe me. This is a beautiful piece. I just love it.
