This time on 14tracks:

“14 tracks: Calypso Connection”

Calypso music originated from the melting pot of Afro-Caribbean cultural identities living on the islands of Trindad & Tobago in the early 20th century. It evolved as a creole form of musical communication used to convey lyrics about sex, politics and local news (but mostly sex), before it came to wider attention with the diffusion of migrants around the Black Atlantic, especially to New York and London. The rhythms of Calypso have since borne the more prevalent and fiery style of Soca, which itself has exerted great influence over contemporary genres like Dancehall and Funky, to name just a few. Our fourteen track selection features three legendary Calypsonians; Lord Kitchner, Duke Of Iron, and Wilmoth Houdini, plus regional variations from Costa Rica, Panama, and Nigeria, displaying the rich confluence of traditions at play in this eternally endearing genre, primed for summer.
