At the heart of African music beats an irrepressible Nigerian pulse. From the foundational Afrobeat of Fela Kuti and his Africa 70 ensemble to Sunny Ade's Yoruba syncopations, Nigerian music has long assimilated Afro-Latin patterns from Cuba and Brazil while augmenting American funk & soul with more traditional tongues, creating an infectious and intoxicating style that's influenced countless artists and producers. The crucible of the 60s/70s Lagos club scene acted as a melting pot of polyrhythms, reprogramming patterns from the rhythm matrix of the Black Atlantic in a double refraction of ideas and vibes. Their influence can be heard in the Broken Beat of Bugz In The Attic, the kinky house of Cooly G or the improvisations of MvO trio while consistently providing dynamite dancefloor material for DJs from Danielle Baldelli to Theo Parrish.
